Pulley Light from This Old House

A few months ago we put Dan's electrical skills to the test in an attempt to make our own Wall Mount Pulley Light, inspired by a how-to we'd seen in This Old House.  We were amazed to see the article, having almost the exact same brace and pulley already on hand (hand-me-down's from Dan's parents and grandparents).  After we secured the brace to the wall and hung the pulley with some twine, we bought a swag light kit at Home Depot that was really quite simple to get working.  We threaded it through the pulley, screwed in our new favorite, a decorative Edison lightbulb, and were pretty impressed with our final product.

After the paint dried on our wicker basket lamp and I bought an Edison bulb conveniently found  at Home Depot now (around 7 dollars) we were all set to get out the ladder and start messing with some wires.  We had to first disconnect and remove the existing chandelier (which we do like so I am excited to see how we can change the shades and put it to work for us somewhere else one day).  

We wound up adding some length to the chain the basket hung from so that it would hover over the dining table at just the right level.  Luckily we had some extra links from the pulley light we assembled a few months ago (that I need to blog about!!) so it was a quick and easy task.  We fed the wires through the existing setup in the ceiling, joined the wires accordingly, and screwed the bracket into place.  After turning the power back on, we crossed our fingers and flipped the switch- it worked!!  

The light is soft and sets the mood we were hoping for, an intimate and warm setting for a meal with the two of us or a group of friends.  The basket continues to add to the shabby-chic look we love and is a great addition to this space.
